FAQ

What is Phototex?

Phototex wallpaper is a paste free wall covering. Simply print it, peel off the backing paper and put it on the wall or other surface. The unique oil based adhesive means Phototex is fully removable as the adhesive does not cure. No more hassle when putting it up or taking it down. If you’ve never had the pleasure of working with Phototex, and want to learn more about the product look at our application pictures, YouTube channel and so on at www.phototex.co.uk.

If you fancy seeing some printed samples please contact us, or if you wish to create some samples yourself then please contact us to purchase your discounted sample roll.

How easy is Phototex to put up?

Phototex is a strong fabric which is rigid enough to remove and refit, this helps in two ways. Firstly when putting up Phototex if there are any bubbles or wrinkles simply peel back and smooth onto the surface again. Secondly if you want to move the poster, peel back and reuse on the new site. If doing this it is good practice to make sure the adhesive side does not come into contact with dirt or dust. Watch this short video to see how easy it is.

Is a special surface needed to stick on?

Phototex will stick to virtually any flat surface and some slightly textures surfaces. We have experience sticking it over wood chip wall paper. Walls, windows, Poles, doors, cars, boats, tiles, sealed wood, mirrors, white fronted goods and many more. Visit any page on www.phototex.co.uk to see real applications.

Can Phototex be used in the bathroom?

Yes it can, high humidity does not affect Phototex. We have been running a test for over 6 months in a shower and it is still stuck as though it was the first day. For added protection it can be liquid laminated.

How do I make cut out shapes?

Phototex can be ‘kiss cut’ when it is printed so you simply peel it off as the right shape, sharp blade are recommended. Phototex can be simply cut with scissors.

Can I put Phototex on newly painted walls?

We always recommend a minimum drying period of 4 weeks for painted wall, longer if possible to make sure that Phototex is easy to remove.

Can I reuse the sticker/wallpaper when I peel it off?

Phototex is well suited for this due to its patented adhesive. We have customers who use Phototex over and over again by re-applying it to the release liner when they take it from the wall, ‘look after the glue and it will look after you’.

How much residue is left on the surface when I peel off the sticker or wallpaper?

99.9% of the time Phototex leaves no residue.

Is Phototex available in sheets and rolls?

Rolls and sheets are available, look at the sizes in our product brochure.

Can Phototex be used outside?

Yes it can, to improve fade resistance Liquid Lamination is recommended. Test have shown outdoor longevity to be 6-12 months depending on the conditions with pigmented inks.

Is Phototex available outside the UK?

We currently have distributors in Austria, Benelux, Cyprus, France, Greece, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and Turkey. We are looking for the right partners in all other European and Middle East countries.

How do I keep up to date with Phototex?

We have a newsletter, sign up for it. Alternatively follow us on Twitter or ‘like‘ our Facebook page.

What is the best way to Liquid Laminate Phototex?

Many of our customers want extra protection for Phototex and use liquid lamination. A positive effect is that Liquid Lamination can also improve the colour vibrancy of the image our Satin Liquid Lamination users have found. We recommend hanging Phototex onto the wall and hand applying Liquid Lamination over the finished article for the best protection. Our Liquid Lamination handbook is available for more information.

Can someone print it for me?

We have partners who specialise in home printing, send us a quick email and we will be in touch.

Do I need to use application tape?

No. Phototex is a polyester weave fabric making it very stable and easy to hang. If there happens to be an issue you simply peel it back and re-apply.

Do you butt-join or overlap Phototex?

Butt joining Phototex gives the best final finish. Phototex is fully coated allowing edge to edge printing. Alternatively you can print it leaving a border and trim with a sharp knife and a long ruler. With practice, joins can be virtually eliminated visually, then a liquid laminate can be applied by roller (WallPaper Matte for example) to seal and protect Phototex.

Is the product totally opaque / blockout?

Phototex is not a 100% block out product. It does mask some of the imperfections of the wall, for the best results a wall free from marks is recommended.

How is Phototex transported?

Phototex can be rolled against itself. It is best if the original lining paper is left on or any other backing release paper/film can be used. If the image is to be taken down and put somewhere else it is good practice to keep the original liner to protect the glue, maintaining the excellent adhesive qualities of Phototex

What is the working temperature range for Phototex?

We have experience through our American partner of Phototex being applied at sub-zero temperatures ( -10 degrees and up to 110 degrees with no issues) and performs in climates as diverse as Denmark and Australia both internally and externally, we still are working on an official application and end use temperature guide. More to follow at the Phototex Club.

How do I get a clean cut with my printer cutter on Phototex?

For the best edge use a sharp blade.  Blades both wear and often become chipped in service, however careful the operator may be. Blades that you might be able to use successfully on a soft Vinyl may not be sharp enough to cut Phototex cleanly as it is a woven textile type of material. Check your blade regularly, using a hand lens, looking for chips or any sign of a blunt edge to the blade.

What is the best way to ensure the most accurate cut on Phototex?

A tangential cutter is generally superior when compared to a drag knife cutter.  There is 0.3mm offset with a drag knife cutter i.e. the point of the blade is 0.3mm (varies from machine to machine) behind the rotational axis of the cutting blade. On a tangential cutter the point is over the rotational axis of the cutting blade. The tangential cutter has a motor that rotates the blade so that the cutting edge is always facing the direction of the cut accurately whereas the drag knife blade tip is always behind and facing at a slight angle to the cutting direction when not cutting in a straight line. In extremis this means that a tangential cutter can cut better (sharper) right angles and can usually do so faster.

Should I let Phototex dry before cutting?

It is always best to make sure any media is dry before starting to cut, Phototex is no exception. Phototex won’t curl if not fully dry but attempting to cut through a “gooey” ink layer may lead to all manner of problems if ink builds up on the blade or the holder.

Should Phototex be removed at a certain temperature?

In normal temperature conditions Phototex is easily removed. In extreme heat conditions, it is better to remove before the sun has had a chance to shine on it in the early morning or late at night.

Can I use the Aqueous Phototex with other print technologies?

Phototex has two specific coatings to get the absolute best from the printers and inks. One is optimised for Aqueous (water based) inks. The other version of Phototex is more universal and can be printed with Solvent, UV and Latex inks. It is highly recommended not to use Phototex with the wrong printing technology as the results will be sub-standard.
